Monitor the Location of Your Dog or Cat with Whistle GPS Pet Tracker

Do you ever wonder what your pets are doing while you are at work? If there's a pet door installed at your home, do they spend their time inside or outside? Or, does the sneaky rascal somehow escape and visit your neighbor?

Two-thirds of U.S. households have a companion animal, according to the American Pet Products Association. It’s no surprise that pet monitoring and care is going high tech. One high-tech gadget on the market that can provide you a wealth of information about your pet is Whistle, a GPS tracking device.

Monitor Your Pets with Whistle

Whistle is a pet monitoring device with nationwide GPS coverage. A stainless steel tag that clips to your dog’s collar is embedded with an accelerometer that records your dog’s location and gives you the information through a smartphone app.

You can track your dog or cat's daily activity on your smartphone. If Fido escapes his fenced yard (which our dog Max has been known to do – there’s a video on this blog about that), you receive a notification via the app or text message. You get this type of alert whenever your pet leaves their custom Whistle zone.

The pet tracking device has a rechargeable battery, and it’s waterproof and durable. It has a retail price of $79.95.

Review: PetArmor Plus Flea, Tick Treatment for Dogs

In Georgia, where the fall and winter months are warmer than other parts of the U.S., the battle against fleas is year round. Our family has used many flea control products over the years. Our search for a superior, no-fail product continues.

Our Papillon Lucy and Shih Tzu mix Shelby help test PetArmor Plus for Dogs and puppies weighing 4 to 22 pounds. It is advertised to kill fleas, ticks and chewing lice for up to 30 days. It's waterproof. It contains the same squeeze-on active ingredients fipronil and (s)-methoprene found in more expensive products, such as Frontline Plus.

PetArmor Plus for Dogs cannot be used on cats; it will kill cats.

What I especially like about this flea treatment is the applicator. Each product package contains three doses, or three applicators. You clip off the top portion of the applicator with scissors, which is marked with a line, and simply apply the dose to your dog between his or her shoulder blades.

I use an electric shaver to shave a section of fur to ensure the liquid flea treatment reaches the skin. The product must be absorbed through the skin -- into your dog's bloodstream -- to work.

Hound and Home gives PetArmor Plus for Dogs 4 stars because it is more affordable than other brands, works just as well as more pricey brands, and is easy to use. The reason it did not earn 5 stars is because we've had failure with the product in the past, though infrequent.

What PetArmor Plus for Dogs Kills

The product's formula kills the following pests:

  • Adult fleas, and flea eggs and larvae for up to 12 weeks
  • Ticks that may transmit Lyme disease
  • Mites that may cause sarcoptic mange
  • Deer ticks
  • Dog ticks, including American dog ticks and lone star ticks

PetArmor Plus for Dogs by Weight

The product comes in four different doses for the following dog weights:

  1. 4-22 lbs
  2. 23-44 lbs
  3. 45-88 lbs
  4. 89-132 lbs

Why Flea Treatments Fail

We have used this product in the past with varying results. It works most of the time, and I believe the success is because we treat all of our pets at the same time and the environment. We wash our dogs a day before, apply the flea treatment to all four dogs at the same time, and also buy a separate flea treatment product for cats to apply to our cat Cash. We vacuum the carpet, treat the carpet with a flea spray, and mop our hardwood floors. We wash pet bedding and our own bedding as the smaller dogs tend to sleep with us. It's a major chore, but if everything is done the same day, you'll have success.

The product has failed, though infrequently, and I believe the reason was that we did not follow all of the steps outlined in the paragraph above. Also, if you apply the spot-on liquid without making sure it reaches your dog's skin, it will not be absorbed and therefore not work. Dog breeds with thick coats, like Golden Retrievers and Alaskan Malamutes, are especially challenging. I recommend that you shave a small section of the fur between his or her shoulder blades and apply the flea treatment there so you know it is absorbed through the skin.

Lastly, the flea medicine could be expired, causing it to fail. Be sure to check the expiration date on the flea control product.

Dogs and Table Manners (or Dogs Without Table Manners)

Our pitbull mix Max enjoys hiding under the dining room tablecloth. Our four dogs know they are not allowed to be under the table or beg during meals. Max thinks we and our dinner guests don't know that he's under there. He pokes people in the knee while "hidden" under the tablecloth. He will also stick his head out as pictured to get attention.

Review: Hollywood Stars Dog Treats in Liver Flavor

If you have older dogs, you know that tooth decay or missing teeth from dental care can make it difficult for them to chew hard dog biscuits. My 12-year-old Shih Tzu Shelby has had dental care during her life that required tooth extraction -- she has never been into chew toys. Her teeth weren't cleaned or scraped through chewing bones or toys.

I discovered the Hollywood Stars dog treats during a shopping trip to one of the nation's largest retailers. The treats are small and soft nuggets -- perfect for Shelby. The 4 oz. milk cartons of dog treats in liver and yogurt flavor were on the bottom shelf in the dog treat section. "Made in the USA" and the retail price of $0.96 caught my interest. I bought two cartons. My Papillon Lucy helped me review the treats.

The liver flavor is advertised to be a skin and coat formula. According to JRB Foods, Inc., who manufacture the treats, the real chicken and linoleic acid, which occurs naturally, help nourish your dog's fur and skin. Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid.

Hollywood Stars Liver Dog Treats Ingredients

  • Chicken liver
  • Chicken (source of linoleic acid)
  • Chicken meal
  • Wheat flour
  • Glycerin

  • Salt
  • Potassium sorbate, citric acid, mixed tocopherols, calcium propionate and BHA as preservatives
  • Rosemary extract

Review: Bausch & Lomb Flurbiprofen Sodium Ophthalmic Eye Drops

If you are the dog mom or dad to a Shih Tzu, Pug, Pekingese, Chihuahua or other dog breed with bulging eyes, chances are you have had to cope with eye injuries and inflammation. My Shih Tzu Shelby, 12, has had two cornea ulcers during her life and frequent irritation caused by eyelashes that grow inward; toward the eye. When she suffers an eye condition, her way of dealing with it is to skid her face across the floor, furniture or bedding to wipe or itch her eye. The activity causes delayed healing, more irritation and, at times, further injury.

Our recent visit to the veterinarian was about a cornea ulcer on her left eye. The veterinarian prescribed Flurbiprofen Sodium Ophthalmic Solution USP, 0.03 percent, which is a sterile topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory product for ophthalmic use in both humans and animals. It is made by Bausch & Lomb Incorporated. Flurbiprofen sodium is a phenylalkanoic acid that has proven analgesic antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties in animal inflammatory diseases.

The product worked well. 5 stars. This product is prescribed for ophthalmic use only. It costs approximately $12.99 at veterinarian clinics and supply stores.

Shelby's Review

Shelby's prescription reads to instill 1 to 2 drops in her left eye every 12 hours for pain. The eye drops are supplied in a plastic bottle with a controlled drop tip in the size 2.5 mL.

The eye dropper delivers the medication quickly and easily. The medicine works very well at lessening Shelby's eye inflammation and pain. The product receives 5 stars.

Avoid touching the bottle tip to the eye or any surface as this could contaminate the tip with common bacteria known to cause ocular infections. Contaminated solutions can result in serious eye damage and, eventually, loss of vision.

Flurbiprofen Sodium Ophthalmic Solution Ingredients

  • Flurbiprofen Sodium
  • Citric Acid Monohydrate
  • Edetate Disodium
  • Hydrochloric Acid
  • Polyvinyl Alcohol
  • Potassium Chloride
  • Water
  • Sodium Chloride
  • Sodium Citrate
  • Sodium Hydroxide
  • Thimerosal

Flurbiprofen Sodium Ophthalmic Solution Side Effects

Burning, stinging and other minor symptoms of eye irritation have been reported, though Shelby seemed fine after receiving her eye drops. Other adverse reactions reported include miosis, fibrosis, ocular hyeremia, hyphema, and mydriasis.

Flurbiprofen Sodium Ophthalmic Solution Warnings

As a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), it may slow or delay healing and should be used with caution in pets who recently had surgery, injury or other health problems.

It is also possible that a cross-sensitivity to acetylsalicylic acid and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs could occur.

Review: SkinGuard CP Medicated Shampoo for Dogs, Cats [Watch]

Our 12-year-old Shih Tzu mix named Shelby has sensitive skin. Fleas, pollen and other irritants often have her scratching and licking her skin.

During a recent veterinarian visit, our vet recommended Vethical SkinGuard CP, an antiseptic shampoo for dogs and cats designed to treat superficial and severe skin conditions with chlorhexidine and climbazole.

The medicated shampoo is advertised to clean, protect and help maintain your pet’s skin health. It can only be purchased through VCA animal hospitals as it is distributed exclusively though VCA-Antech, Inc. It's retail price is $28.00 per 8 oz. bottle.

According to Vethical, SkinGuard CP should do the following:

  • Gently remove dirt, crusts, scales and pimples
  • Control bacteria, yeasts and fungi
  • Eliminate pruritus and itching
  • Restore the skin barrier and ceramide levels to stop skin irritation
  • Regulate associated seborrhea and inflammation
  • Moisturize the pet's skin

SkinGuard CP Review

While the product performed well in reducing skin irritation, eliminating itching and more over time, it does not lather or spread across the skin well. We had to use quite a bit of it to create enough lather to ensure Shelby's entire skin was covered.

Once your pet's skin is covered, the product stays on the skin for 5 to 10 minutes, and then is rinsed off.

The shampoo alleviated Shelby's skin allergy itching for roughly 12 hours. Her skin allergy is/was not severe.  At $28.00 an 8 oz. bottle, it isn't economically feasible to frequently use this product. It may be best to ask your veterinarian for medication to couple with an oatmeal/organic-based soothing shampoo.

Hound and Home gives SkinGuard CP 3 stars. The amount of shampoo that must be used each wash plus the frequency of use does not make this product budget-friendly. It performs OK, but no better than similar medicated shampoos on the market that cost less.

SkinGuard CP Ingredients

The shampoo is hypoallergenic and contains Chlorhexidine 3%, Climbazole 0.5%, Lipacide C8G, and Phytosphingosine-salicyloyl. "Phytosphingosine is a new molecule in veterinary dermatology. It is a natural component of the epidermis and plays a key role in the building and maintenance of the skin defense barrier," the website reads. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and controls excess oils and scaling or crusting of the skin.

Review of Petmate Break Away Cat Collar

Our cat Cash, like any curious and active feline, attempts to squeeze himself into tight spaces, leap over or crawl under fences, and chase wildlife up trees. For that reason, we thought it best to invest in a break away cat collar.

We purchased a 3/8 inch Petmate Break Away Cat Collar for cats weighing 6 pounds or more because of the vibrant colors available, the bell and break away buckle. We chose the color red because it is highly visible to people and passing cars when worn by Cash who is stark white.

The bell that comes with the collar is present, according to the company who makes it, to protect the local bird population. It is removable. We removed the bell from Cash's collar.

Best of all, if your cat's collar becomes hung up on a tree limb, fence or other object, the collar quickly releases, allowing your beloved feline friend to escape.

The break away collar is not designed for use with a leash or tie out. The company suggests that you purchase a harness if you intend to leash walk or tie out your cat.

We are pleased with this product. 5 stars.

The Petmate Break Away Cat Collar is made in China by the Doskocil Manufacturing Company, Inc. in Arlington, Texas. has a typical retail price of $4.99. It can be found in chain retailers that sell pet products.

Have you used a break away collar with your cat? What kind have you used and would you recommend in? Share your experience in the comment section below.

Review: Pet Friendly Travelodge Inn and Suites Gatlinburg Tennessee

Photo credit: Travelodge Inn & Suites
My husband and I decided to stay in Gatlinburg, Tennessee November 13-15, 2015. Gatlinburg is a mountain town in eastern Tennessee, which borders the 520,000-acre Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It's typical to see elk, wild turkeys and other wildlife during the drive through the majestic mountains. Gatlinburg's attractions include a 407-ft. Space Needle observation tower, a Sky Lift, a 2.1-mile aerial cable car that travels from downtown to the ski resort Ober Gatlinburg.

We married there in April at a quaint chapel in the mountains. We were distracted by all things wedding, so we thought it would be nice to return and explore the town.

We chose Travelodge Inn and Suites in Gatlinburg on the River because it welcomes pets. Our room rate was $99.99 a night. Our two small dogs Lucy and Shelby stayed for an additional $20.00 a night each. Roscoe, Max and Cash stayed home with visits from a pet sitter.

Shelby, 12, has traveled with me by car and plane over the years. She's a seasoned traveler. She is calm. She never gets car sick. She sleeps most of the time.

Lucy, 2, has ridden in the car briefly. I was pleasantly surprised that she handled the more than three hour car ride well. Both dogs enjoyed stopping at mountain overlooks and mountain areas for potty breaks.

The Travelodge Inn and Suites in Gatlinburg is an older hotel that set on the banks of the Little Pigeon River. Each guest room overlooks the river, which is nice. It's a short walk to fantastic restaurants and shops. It offers a free breakfast that is adequate; the coffee was delicious.

Check in was fast and easy. Our room was on the third floor. There is an old and drafty elevator, or you can take the stairs. Shelby had lived with me in an Atlanta high rise years ago -- taking the elevator was fun for her. Lucy, meanwhile, was spread eagle and flattened on the elevator floor the first couple of elevator rides as though she was expecting a bomb to go off.

The room was nicely decorated and clean. The A/C and heating unit thermostat did not work properly. The bathroom shower and tub unit was new. The ceiling of the shower and tub unit was low. If you are 6-foot or taller, chances are you will not be able to stand upright while you shower.

We laid out a couple of pee pads on the bathroom tile -- just in case. I'm happy to report that none were used. Our two girls had no issues going potty on the property so we had no accidents.

There is not a designated dog park or a lot of grass areas for dog potty breaks. The hotel didn't recommend where to take the dogs. The car parking lot beneath the hotel, which is open air, does have a patch of grass behind it next to the river. It is the best choice for a potty area. Otherwise, you have to use the landscaped area next to the pool, which other guests may frown upon, or go for a walk in town and poop scoop.

I laid out the dogs' favorite blanket and toys, which kept them busy while we were out and about.

One good thing about the hotel's age; the rooms seem well insulated. We could not hear our next door neighbors, which was wonderful because the dogs were not alarmed and inclined to bark.

The room balconies overlook the river. Unfortunately, we could not allow the dogs on the balcony because all of the rooms open to a shared balcony, which is our number one complaint about the hotel. It is important to remember to lock the door leading out the shared balcony or strangers could access your room.

There were many dogs of all sizes staying at Travelodge Inn and Suites at Gatlinburg the weekend we were there.

In conclusion, we were satisfied with our stay at Travelodge's pet friendly hotel. We felt it was a good value. In hindsight, we should've asked for a room switch since the A/C and heat unit was not working properly.

The dogs enjoyed their stay. There are no negative incidents to report at the hotel concerning the dogs. Hound and Home recommends this Travelodge Inn for dogs.

Travelodge Inn and Suites Pet Policy

View from the balcony.
The Travelodge in Gatlinburg website currently states that there is a maximum of two pets allowed for a fee of $25.00 per pet per night. The rate must have increased. We paid $20 a night.

Max weight of 20 lbs. or less per pet. I don't think the hotel staff observes this policy because we saw dogs weighing over 20 pounds while there. Ask the reservation clerk if they will allow your larger dog.

Additional fees may be charged if room is found damaged or dirty because of your pet. Please do not leave pets unattended.

ADA defined service animals are also welcome at this hotel.

Travelodge Inn and Suites on the River is located at 218 Ski Mountain Road, Gatlinburg, TN 37738. 1-865-325-1516. Check in is after 3:00 p.m. Check out is before 11:00 a.m.

Friskies Wet Classic Pate Supreme Supper Cat Food Review

Our five-year-old cat Cash is a finicky eater like many cats. We are always on the hunt for a canned cat food and kibble that is nutritious and that he will enjoy. If you are a cat mom or dad, you know finding a food to appease your kitty is no easy task.

The Purina Friskies Classic Paté Supreme Supper is advertised to include flavors of fish, poultry, and liver, as well as a pleasing texture. Texture is important to Cash. As you will see in future wet cat food reviews, if Cash doesn't like the texture, he will refuse to eat it or shake his head while the food is in his mouth, possibly creating a mess.

I picked up this flavor of Purina wet cat food during a recent supermarket trip. Cash was eager for breakfast. It seemed the perfect time to break open the can, serve and let him review it.

Below is information about the product.

Packaging

Friskies Wet Classic Pate Supreme Supper Cat Food 5.5 oz. can. The can cost $0.50 from a chain retailer.

Ingredients

Meat by-products, poultry by-products, water sufficient for processing, liver, fish, rice, artificial and natural flavors, calcium phosphate, added color, guar gum, potassium chloride, salt, carrageenan, magnesium sulfate, taurine, thiamine mononitrate, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, niacin, calcium pantothenate, Vitamin A supplement, copper sulfate, manganese sulfate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, biotin, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, potassium iodide. C-6060-5.5

Guaranteed Analysis

Crude Protein (Min) 10.0 %
Crude Fat (Min) 5.0 %
Crude Fiber (Max) 1.00 %
Moisture (Max) 78.0 %
Ash (Max) 3.5 %
Taurine (Min) 0.05 %

As a concerned cat mom, I have to wonder why added color is necessary. I don't think Cash cares what the food looks like. I mean, he's eating a lump of mush from a can...not a freshly killed rabbit. Does added color really matter?

The artificial flavor is another ingredient that may be unnecessary. I'd be interested to know which flavor has been artificially added.

In conclusion, the Friskies Wet Classic Pate Supreme Supper receives a 5-star review from Cash.

How to Rid Your Cat of a Flea Infestation

Our cat Cash warming the lunch tortillas.
Did you know that one mating female flea will lay approximately 20 eggs daily -- half of which hatch to females -- and can eventually produce about 20,000 new adult fleas in 60 days?

The typical cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis felis) find a warm, comfortable place to live, nourishment and a great place to raise a family on the hind quarters of your beloved cat. Flea bites cause terrible itching, and if your cat is hypersensitive, incessant scratching can lead to open skin wounds that are vulnerable to infection. The fleas can also carry infectious agents, like cat and dog tapeworm, and the bacteria that causes cat-scratch fever in people.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine recommends two ways to counter flea infestation in your home:
  1. You must rid your cat of the fleas.
  2. You must get the fleas out of the environment where your cat spends time, which means treating inside your home and outdoor property (if your cat or other pets are allowed outside).
Removing fleas from your cat's environment requires meticulous vacuuming, washing pet bedding, using flea-killing products, and, if a severe infestation, the services of a professional exterminator.

Flea Treatments That Work

William Miller Jr., VMD, a professor of dermatology at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine, says that using a topical or oral flea treatment faithfully for all pets in the household "beginning in the spring of the year and going into the fall before colder weather sets in" will likely result in your cat remaining free of fleas.

The treatments also help flea dermatitis.

Not sure which flea product to purchase? Click here to read a list of over-the-counter medications and products recommended by the Cornell University Hospital for Animals.

Dr. Miller says that treating your cat and other pets is not enough. You need to prevent recurring flea infestation in the environment. Raccoons, skunks, possums and other wildlife will bring fleas to the yard. The fleas will jump on your animal companions and once inside your home, you'll have a re-infestation of fleas by the thousands.

Read the label of flea killing products carefully because some substances are created only for dogs and can be toxic to cats.

PetArmor FastCaps Nitenpyram Flea Medicine Review

In our household of four dogs and one indoor/outdoor cat, the battle against fleas rages all year. In 2015, the fleas have been especially difficult to get rid of since Georgia has had only two frosts and our winter temperatures, so far, have been mostly around 60 and 70 degrees. The fleas are thriving outdoors, which brings up another important fact -- if you can afford to treat the outside of your home for fleas, you should as part of the overall flea control plan.

I've had animal companions my entire life, and I have tried flea baths, flea collars, flea bombs, pest control professionals, topical flea treatments, flea medication tablets and more over the years. I no longer use unsafe methods like flea bombs, but I have not found an infallible flea control method. My research into less toxic flea control options continues.

A recent fail using a topical product for cats and dogs that provides flea and tick control for 30 days led me to try a new product. At a chain retailer I found PetArmor FastCaps, which has an active ingredient called Nitenpyram. Nitenpyram is a fast acting, orally administered flea treatment that is absorbed into the blood of your dog or cat and is quickly ingested via blood by feeding fleas. It is the same ingredient used in the veterinarian recommended drug Capstar.

FastCaps offers Nitenpyram in 57.0 mg tablets for dogs over 25 pounds. There are tablets for smaller dogs and cats as well.

The box of FastCaps reads, "Begins working within 30 minutes." Sold! I was so excited that I purchased two of the products, one dose for our two large dogs, Roscoe and Max, and our two small dogs, Shelby and Lucy, and Cash, our cat.

The product directions read, "A single does of FastCaps tablest should kill the adult fleas on your pet." It is important to realize the flea eggs will not be killed by the product, so you will need to shampoo your pets. wash bedding, vacuum carpets, mop your floors and treat the environment.

I wrapped the FastCaps tablet in cheese. Max was the only dog who spit out the pill. I waited a few minutes, hid the pill inside a piece of hotdog, and Max swallowed it whole. Administering this flea tablet to dogs is rather easy.

Our cat Cash was a different story. Cash is not the kind of cat you can open his mouth and place a pill in his throat -- you would be risking life and limb! I hid the crumbled tablet mixed in his cat food. He ate only a small portion. We have concluded it is best to use a topical flea treatment for Cash, however, this product may work well in more cooperative kitties.

Side Effects

Lucy, our Papillon, had unusual excitability. She could not sit still. This lasted nearly two hours after she was given the FastCaps tablet.

No other side effects noted in Roscoe, Max or Shelby.

The product claims to achieve greater than 90 percent effectiveness against adult fleas on dogs within 4 hours and cats within 6 hours. The first time we used the tablets, our dogs had noticeable relief in about four to five hours -- no sooner.

To effectively counter flea infestation, I know that I must get the fleas out of our home and off our property. We did not call a professional exterminator because we had hoped winter frost would kill the fleas outside. Inside our home, I vacuumed the furniture, rugs, carpeting and mopped floors. I sprayed the carpet with a veterinarian recommended pesticide spray, which required that the room be closed off until the spray was dry.

I washed the bedding, including human bedding, and shampooed Lucy and Shelby. I would have shampooed Roscoe and Max but they ran and once I cornered each one, the wrestling match ended in a loss for me. Later, I took both boys outside on the deck for a good brushing, which I hoped would get rid of the flea eggs.

According to veterinarians, for best results, you must use a flea treatment exactly as directed beginning in the spring, through summer and going into winter. Your animal companion is more likely to remain free of fleas.

The PetArmor FastCaps, combined with the home flea treatment and grooming, was a success. Re-infestation is inevitable, but the period of time between dosing is unknown and likely varies depending on the pet's environment. The product manufacturer claims you can give another dose as often as once per day.

FastCaps tablets are safe for use in dogs, puppies, cats and kittens that weigh 2 pounds or more, and are 4 weeks of age or older. The tablets are also safe for pregnant and breeding dogs and cats.

PetArmor FastCaps are made in France and manufactured for Sergeant's Pet Care Products, Inc. in Omaha, Nebraska. The tablets are available for purchase at chain and online retailers.

Sportmix Wholesomes Chicken Meal and Rice Formula Dog Food Review

If you are a dog parent concerned about feeding only the best dog food, you're not alone. In the last decade, more "natural" dog food brands have come on the market; from grain-free food inspired by the diet of wolves to formulas with Omega 6 and 3 fatty acids to ensure your pet's diet is balanced and healthy.

The most popular natural dog food brands have omitted corn, wheat, soy and other fillers, which is a good thing. Canine digestive tracts are not designed for food like corn or wheat. Canines are carnivores. A wolf's diet ranges from big game, like elk, to berries and insects like grasshoppers and even earthworms. (Which explains why your dog eats a bug occasionally!)

There are many brands of corn, wheat and soy free dog food. Some brands are very expensive. Which is the best? Does a higher price reflect a more superior product?

We feed our dogs the same kibble, which is a natural and healthier dog food. When Tractor Supply had Sportmix Wholesomes Chicken Meal and Rice Formula dog food in a 40 pound bag on sale, we tried it for the first time. I had never heard of the brand before, but it was on the shelf next to Blue Buffalo, 4Health and other popular premium brands, so I thought why not?

Roscoe, Shelby, Lucy and Max emptied their food bowls. The chicken meal and rice formula was a hit with all of our dogs, which is amazing because usually someone is a finicky eater. They even ate it dry (without warm water or wet food mixed in).

The first five ingredients are chicken meal, brown rice, rice flour, rice bran and chicken fat preserved with mixed Tocopherals. Tocopherols are vitamin E compounds naturally found in nuts, leafy vegetables, vegetable oils and fish. The nutritional benefits of Vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) and its importance as part of the human and canine daily diet has been well documented.

Other ingredients include dried beet pulp, flaxseed, dried egg product, as well as vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin D3 supplement and Niacin.

The guaranteed analysis is as follows:

Calorie Content (calc. ME) 3,650 kcal/kg, 370 kcal/cup

The company notes that the Omega 3 Fatty Acids are not recognized as an essential ingredient by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles.

The current retail price for a 40 pound bag of the Chicken Meal and Rice Formula is $29.99, which is a bargain.

Sportmix Wholesomes Chicken Meal and Rice Formula is manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. in Evansville, Indiana. The company makes a line of Sportmix brand dog foods, dog biscuit treats and cat food.

The Hound and Home dogs give Sportmix Wholesomes Chicken Meal and Rice Formula five stars.
